Mountain Side Hobbies Sandia Sandhawk 3"

My Sandhawk

Well, the BIG rockets are what got me back. They just look so much more impressive. And this is the biggest I've got so far. This thing is almost 6 feet tall and 3" around! You can see MSH's information on this kit including two photos of it here

I took my time building this kit to make it absolutely perfect (So watch it die on it's first flight). I coated the coupler in CA and sanded it to a perfectly smooth fit. It almost feels like plastic it's so smooth. The fins I took care to monokote before mounting and spent three days making sure they were straight and strong. With 6 large 30 minute epoxy fillets on each fin I'd be willing to bet the plywood will break before they come off.

Since the kit features a 22" long payload section I plan on eventually building a 35mm camera payload for it. At this time I have a camera but I'm pretty sure it's too heavy and big to fly well. I'm still looking for something with a faster shutter than the Opus 35 so many people are using.

CURRENT STATUS:
Almost ready to fly. I still need to add launch lugs and paint it. But I'm trying to decide if I want to use fly away lugs so I can also fly this one from a tower if I ever get the chance. For final finish I plan on a high gloss medium light green color with my silver monokote fins. I also plan on giving it a name in silver monokote down the side. If this kite flys as well as I hope I may look into using it for Level 1 certification eventually. Though I probably should have gone with the 38mm motor mount for that.
